Description

Poxon Art Pottery Bowl Los Angeles California Precursor to Vernon Kilns Antique Description and Item Information Up for sale is this rare, antique California art pottery bowl or vase by Poxon. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This bowl has a beautiful, glossy glaze which is blended blue and green over mottled blue. It is approximately 7 3/4 inches in diameter with a height of about 2 1/2 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 15.4 ounces. This would be an uncommon addition to an arts and crafts or mission style decor or to a collection of early California art pottery. Identification This piece has impressed markings beneath, "POXON LOS ANGELES 102." It is circa 1910s or 1920s; the exact age is not known. Per The Maximalist, Poxon was founded in Vernon, California (an industrial suburb of South Los Angeles) by George Wade in 1912. Initially producing artware, vases, and ceramic tile, Poxon later shifted production to earthenware and restaurant ware. The pottery burned down in 1927. Due to the difficulty in rebuilding during the Great Depression, Poxon was sold to Faye Bennison in 1931, who called the pottery Vernon Kilns. Condition The bowl looks very good overall, with no cracks or clay chips. There are two small glaze loss/flaking areas to the rim, as shown in Photos 5 and 6. It has minor wear from use with some patchy dullness to the interior and some scattered scuffs and scratches elsewhere. As made, there are variations in glaze application, with a small glaze skip to the foot. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying.
